The IKEA Museum’s website presents “The Story of IKEA” through accounts of product ideas, company decisions and founder Ingvar Kamprad’s working principles. One story describes the hot dog as a model for good quality at a low price, an idea IKEA explored in the mid-1990s. Another looks at Kamprad’s view that mistakes can teach lessons. He set out his ideas about how IKEA should work in The Testament of a Furniture Dealer, published in 1976.
Other stories trace IKEA’s move into furniture sales in the late 1940s and the changes in purchasing, finance and distribution that followed. The website recounts a goal to sell LED bulbs for less than one euro, an attempt to promote indoor composting, and the story of a blue tote bag that has been in IKEA’s range for more than 30 years. Its accounts connect everyday products with the company’s approach to design and price.
