The IKEA Museum follows the company's story from its beginnings in Älmhult to its expansion around the world. Visit Sweden says it is in the building where Ingvar Kamprad opened the first IKEA department store in 1958; Wikidata gives the museum's opening year as 2016.

The museum's material covers IKEA's move into furniture in the late 1940s and later changes to purchasing, costs and distribution. Stories on its website range from Kamprad's view that mistakes can teach lessons to ideas about low-priced hot dogs, indoor composting and an effort to sell LED bulbs for less than one euro. The website also lets readers browse IKEA catalogues from 1970, 1980, 1982, 1986 and 1997, with products, interiors and styles from each period.

Visit Sweden says children are welcome. It also points visitors to KÖKET, the museum restaurant, whose menu includes plant-based meatballs, classic meatballs and Swedish specialities. IKEA Hotel is across the street.
