It is according to a new law that was approved by the country's parliament on Thursday. Above all, the opposition is affected by the law, many of whom have supported the sanctions against the authoritarian regime.

The punitive measures taken against Venezuela constitute a "crime against humanity", it is stated in the law, among other things.

Most recently on Wednesday, the USA announced that new sanctions would be issued against 21 individuals accused of having influenced the presidential election in Venezuela in July, where incumbent President Nicolás Maduro was declared the winner by the government-friendly electoral authority.

The election result has been questioned by large parts of the international community, including the EU, Mexico, Colombia, and Brazil.
