With the 5,000 extra soldiers, it means that around 7,000 soldiers will help with the aftermath of the storm. This after a request from Valencia's regional leader Carlos Mazón, writes El Mundo.
Even 5,000 extra police officers are being deployed, promises Prime Minister Pedro Sánchez in a televised speech.
There is still no official figure for how many are missing after the deadly floods in Spain.
"War scenario"
Over 200 people have died in the floods that swept across Spain on Tuesday. The worst affected region is Valencia, where the situation has been described as "a war scenario".
The Swedish Ministry of Foreign Affairs is closely following the situation but has no knowledge of any Swedish citizen having died.
"At present, we have no knowledge of missing, deceased or seriously injured Swedes, but we are in contact with Swedes who are in the area", writes the Ministry of Foreign Affairs in an email to TT on Saturday morning.
Many still missing
People are still missing – but it is far from clear how many. According to sources in the regional government of Valencia that the newspaper El Mundo has accessed, the authorities are working with a list of around 2,500 calls about missing persons. The calls have come in to a special hotline set up in response to the disaster.
But as mobile coverage returns, people are rescued from hard-to-reach areas and relatives manage to contact each other, the figure is decreasing. Already, it has halved from the total of 5,000 calls that came in during the first days, and the authorities expect the figure to decrease further.
Valencia's regional leader Carlos Mazón urges everyone who has called in about missing persons to also notify the authorities if the persons in question have been found again.
The storm is still not over. The Spanish weather agency upgraded its rain warning for the area around Valencia from yellow, the lowest of three levels, to orange, the second highest, during the night to Saturday. An orange warning also applies to Catalonia and the Balearic Islands, writes El País.
