A whole generation of children has been traumatized by the war in Gaza, says Tom Fletcher, head of the UN's disaster relief organization, Ocha.
Cautious estimates show that over 17,000 children are without their families in Gaza, he said at a meeting in the UN Security Council on Thursday.
Fletcher did not provide concrete figures on the number of children killed, but said that some children died "before their first breath", as they died together with their mothers during childbirth.
Around 150,000 pregnant women and new mothers are in desperate need of care, according to Tom Fletcher. He also referred to figures from Unicef and stated that one million children in Gaza need psychological support and care for depression, anxiety and suicidal thoughts.
