UK Government to Cut Expenses by 15 Percent Over Four Years

The British state's running expenses are to be reduced by 15 percent over four years, according to the country's Finance Minister Rachel Reeves. The announcement is made in a BBC interview ahead of a spring budget speech on Wednesday, where Reeves is expected to present more details on the budget cuts.

Converted into money, this budget tightening corresponds to 2.2 billion pounds (approximately 29 billion kronor) per year within the government administration, according to BBC.

One measure to reduce expenses is a reduction of 10,000 employees, which she reported to TV channel Sky News early on Sunday. This corresponds to approximately 2 percent of the workforce.

According to Reeves, the personnel reductions will be made possible, among other things, by new technology and artificial intelligence (AI).

She added that the number of publicly employed individuals increased significantly during the pandemic, but that the need looks completely different now than then.

When it comes to which government services should be eliminated, she wants each department in the British government to develop its own staffing plan.

But I would prefer if there were people working out in our schools and hospitals, in our police force, rather than in offices, she said to Sky News.

On Tuesday, the government, which took office last summer, presented disputed cuts in benefit levels for the disabled – which is expected to save more than 5 billion pounds (approximately 66 billion kronor) by 2030.

Reeves' speech on Wednesday comes simultaneously with a new forecast from the budget authority OBR.
