Karolinska Institutet is among the 50 best universities in the world, and Uppsala University is among the 100 best on this year's list of Academic Ranking of World Universities ( ARWU ), or the Shanghai Ranking.

Despite the recognition, both universities have dropped slightly compared to last year's ranking: Karolinska Institutet from 37th place to 43rd, and Uppsala University from 82nd to 88th.

The highest ranked, for the 22nd year, is the American university Harvard, followed by Stanford. No less than 38 universities in the USA are on the top 100 list.

The highest ranked European university is the one in Cambridge, in fourth place, and in the Nordic countries, the University of Copenhagen is the highest ranked, in 32nd place.

The ARWU list has been compiled since 2003, with a focus on research, such as the number of published scientific articles and Nobel Prizes. It is compiled by the organization Shanghai Ranking Consultancy.
