Three Sentenced for Attempted Bombing of Israeli Company

Three people are convicted for the attempted bombings against the Israeli defense company Elbit Systems in Gothenburg. But who was really behind it remains unknown. This is just one assignment they took, says prosecutor Johan Udén.

It was in the beginning of June that two thermos bombs were placed outside Elbit Systems' premises.

The bombs – which contained 3.3 kilos of dynamite explosive – did not detonate, but caused some smoke development.

Two days later, according to the verdict, another attempt was made, but was interrupted because the police were present outside the company. During a later house search, a thermos bomb with 0.8 kilos of dynamite explosive was found.

Now, two people are being sentenced for placing the bombs and one for handling the explosives.

Large damages

So far, however, the person or persons behind it have not been identified.

It was not part of this case. But it is definitely not these three, it's just a task they have taken, says prosecutor Johan Udén.

They have no political motives of their own, it could just as well have been someone else affected rather than this company.

A 25-year-old man is being sentenced to seven years in prison and a 16-year-old boy to one year and two months of closed youth care. They are being sentenced for, among other things, preparation for gross general endangerment and gross unlawful threats.

They are also being sentenced to pay damages to Elbit Systems of approximately 4.9 million kronor as compensation for, among other things, increased surveillance costs and personal protection.

Shooting at the company

At the same time, a 30-year-old man is being sentenced to four years and nine months in prison for, among other things, violating the law on flammable and explosive goods. He is, however, acquitted of the charge of aiding and abetting the attempted bombing.

All of them deny any wrongdoing.

Elbit Systems was also subjected to a shooting in the beginning of October. A 15-year-old boy is suspected of having fired the shots, while two more people are suspected of being involved.
