Efter the chaos that occurred on roads such as E22 during the winter, the Swedish Transport Administration has now been tasked with improving winter road maintenance. This is stated in a press release.

"In connection with the snowfall during the winter, there were shortcomings in the management of winter road maintenance that need to be addressed. An important part is to ensure that winter road maintenance functions efficiently and effectively even in challenging weather conditions," says Infrastructure and Housing Minister Andreas Carlson (KD) in the press release.

During the winter, several incidents occurred where traffic came to a standstill on major roads during heavy snowfall. In one of the more notable cases, a large number of vehicles became stuck on E22 in Skåne for more than a day. After the incident, criticism was directed at several authorities – including the Swedish Transport Administration – for inadequate handling of the situation.

By October 31, 2024, the Swedish Transport Administration must report on the measures the authority will implement – or intends to implement – to improve winter road maintenance.
