Due to the heat, the Swedish Transport Administration has decided that the trains in parts of northern Sweden will drive "cautiously", reports SVT News.
The decision is due to the fact that sparks from the rail can cause forest fires in the dry soil. The train drivers should not step on the gas as much in the uphill slopes – in order to then avoid braking heavily in the downhill slopes. In that way, the Swedish Transport Administration hopes that spark formation will be avoided.
We want the trains to be punctual but the risk of fire weighs heavier, says Ulrika Geeraedts, acting director-general of the Swedish Transport Administration, to SVT.
