"The hospital is already investigating the incident and will make a Lex Maria report. But we believe that the matter is so serious and extensive that we want to go even deeper, and also get an external perspective", says the chairman of the hospital board Neil Ormerod (V) in a press release.
"It is important to find out what went wrong so that we can make sure it never happens again".
The women had, after sampling, been informed that they had cell changes that are a precursor to cervical cancer, which is why surgery was recommended. But the diagnosis proved to be incorrect.
The external review will, according to Region Uppsala, be a complement to the Lex Maria investigation and highlight the sequence of events before and after the incorrect test results were discovered.
The review will be reported to the hospital board no later than March 31 next year.
