Why we cannot specify (the number of dead) more at present is that the damage is so extensive, says Roberto Eid Forest, head of the local police area Örebro, at a press conference on Tuesday evening.
The work of identifying the dead is ongoing, so the police are not yet providing any information on the age of the victims.
The suspect – a man in his 35s according to earlier media reports – is believed to be one of the dead.
There are currently no suspicions that it is a terrorist crime, and the police believe that the man acted alone.
We still believe that we have the primary perpetrator, even though we do not rule out others with connections, says Roberto Eid Forest.
Unknown to the police
The suspected perpetrator was previously unknown to the police and has no connection to any criminal gang.
At present, we feel safe in saying that no further attacks will occur. Several investigative measures are being taken, mapping of this person, witness interviews, and victim interviews, says Roberto Eid Forest.
The alarm about the shooting at Campus Risbergska came at around 12:30 on Tuesday. The school is the center for municipal adult education in Örebro.
The police cordoned off students at several schools in the area and a nearby restaurant. The public was advised to stay away from the area. All students had left the schools by evening.
The police are working on the shooting as a special incident, and the police are receiving support from other police regions.
Patrik Ungsäter, regional police chief, said at an earlier press conference that they quickly received support from the special response unit from Stockholm. He cannot comment on how many shots were fired or with what weapon.
The next step is to determine the motive, he said.
In crisis mode
Region Örebro has gone into crisis mode and has established a special healthcare management.
We have received injured patients, but I cannot confirm how many and I cannot say anything about their condition, says Karin Stenström, communications manager at Region Örebro's healthcare administration.
The municipality of Örebro has also set up a crisis organization after what happened at Campus Risbergska.
We naturally activate our support groups, which is an opportunity for people who need psychological and social support and care to come and receive it, says municipal director Peter Larsson.
