Donald Trump had not even taken office as president before he revived an old desire to take control of Greenland. The move sent shockwaves through Denmark, where politicians initially did not know whether to take him literally or with a pinch of salt.
Now comes the response: A proposal for Denmark to buy California to meet the country's need for sun and palm trees.
In a digital initiative with elements of obvious satire – those who support the proposal can sign "The Tremendous Plan" which aims to "Make California Danish".
Over 200,000 people have already shown their support for the plan, which, among other things, flirts with the idea of renaming Disneyland to "Hans Christian Andersenland" and Los Angeles to "Løs Ångeles".
"We will introduce hygge in Hollywood, bike lanes in Beverly Hills, and organic smørrebrød in every street corner. The principles of the rule of law, free healthcare, and fact-based politics may also be on the agenda", the plan reads, which negotiators from Lego are expected to land.
The initiators also believe that Donald Trump could be lured by the idea at the right price, since he himself has called California "the most ruined state".
The name collection has gained significant international attention and has been reported on by The Guardian, Deutsche Welle, Danmarks Radio, and France 24.
