Sweden's membership in the defense alliance NATO and its significance. It was one of the main points in King Carl XVI Gustaf's speech in connection with the opening of the Riksdag.
It strengthens our defense capabilities and paves the way for closer cooperation with other allies. NATO's primary purpose is to secure peace. Here, Sweden can play an important role, said the King in his speech.
King Carl XVI Gustaf also emphasized that membership is not just about what Sweden can get out of this, but also what the country can give back.
With this responsibility also come obligations to defend democracy so that future generations can enjoy the same freedoms and rights as today.
The King also highlighted current challenges in his speech, not only geopolitical unrest but also climate change, a strained healthcare system, and gang crime. Finally, the King had a message for the Riksdag politicians:
What you decide in this chamber will affect the Swedish people for many years to come.
