The discovery made in Trollhättan is "sensational", according to Niklas Ytterberg, who is an antiquarian at the county administrative board in Västra Götaland.
"This is a very unique and valuable ancient find. Neither I nor my colleagues have experienced anything similar", he says in a press release.
The neck ring, which was found at a depth of approximately two meters, weighs 916 grams and is estimated to be over 2,000 years old.
"The neck ring is likely to have been manufactured in Scandinavia. Those found in British-French areas often do not have a wrapped gold thread around", says Niklas Ytterberg.
