After weeks of careful consideration, I have decided that the best for the agency is that I serve until the end of the current administration in January and then resign, he says according to NBC News.

The incoming President of the United States, Donald Trump, has previously announced that he wants the loyal Kash Patel as head of the FBI.

The head of the FBI usually sits on the post for ten years, since the reform was implemented after the Watergate scandal. Wray took office in 2017.

Trump has previously hinted that he is not fond of Wray, and has said that he "invaded Mar-a-Lago", referring to the FBI's search of Trump's residence in Florida in 2022 for classified documents.

Patel, formerly among other things a prosecutor and now part of the group preparing Trump's inauguration in January, has said that he wants to go after everyone he claims helped Joe Biden "rig the election" in 2020 so that Trump lost the White House to Biden.

He also wants to pursue officials who leak to the media and make it easier to sue journalists.
