The Authority will present new dietary guidelines at the beginning of next year and now the proposed changes will be sent out for consultation.
According to one of the proposals, the recommended amount of red meat, which is currently 500 grams, will be reduced by 30 percent to a maximum of 350 grams per week.
Currently, Swedes already eat more red meat, i.e. meat from cattle, pigs, lambs, reindeer, and game, than recommended.
The reason behind the proposed reduction is the strong evidence in research that red meat likely increases the risk of colon and rectal cancer. Approximately 6,000 Swedes are affected by the disease each year.
In addition to less meat, the National Food Agency also proposes that the recommended amount of fruits and vegetables be increased slightly.
