Strömmer Addresses Rising Threats and Violence in Prisons

"Threats and violence are never acceptable", says Minister of Justice Gunnar Strömmer (The Moderate Party) in a comment.

The number of cases of threats and violence within the country's prisons has increased by 60 percent in five years.

According to Gunnar Strömmer, some of the problems can be attributed to the previous S-government, which did not initiate the expansion of the institutions.

"The result of this is a strained occupancy situation", he writes.

During 2024, the average occupancy rate for fixed places in institutions was 131 percent, an increase of 11 percentage points compared to 2023, according to statistics from the Prison and Probation Service.

He says that the government is now implementing "historically large investments" to expand the Prison and Probation Service, and that it is being done in dialogue with the agency. At the same time, he views the situation seriously.

"Threats and violence are never acceptable, and it is of course serious to be exposed to this in your work, or as an inmate".
