Swedish military to train with national guard in the state of New York, reports Sveriges Radio's Ekot. Sweden has initiated a new bilateral cooperation with the USA in addition to the NATO cooperation.
The national guard is a military reserve force governed by each state. According to the Ministry of Defence, 17 states had expressed interest in the cooperation, but the choice fell on New York.
Swedish soldiers and officers will now be trained in large-scale military operations at division level, which the New York national guard has extensive experience of. Something that the Swedish Armed Forces need to develop, says Rikard Askstedt, Sweden's defence attaché in Washington, to Ekot.
In turn, the American military will get to train in winter conditions in Sweden.
