A well-known Swedish researcher is suspected of having been subjected to a data breach by a foreign power, reports Sveriges Radio Ekot.
The researcher, who has previously worked for, among others, Säpo, is said to have been informed of the incident by the authority, according to documents that Ekot has accessed.
The Swedish Security Service's operations are also reported to have been affected by the breach, according to the police report. However, it is unclear in what way. It is unclear whether the data breach has led to a foreign power gaining access to classified Säpo material.
I can say that the Swedish Security Service has conducted a preliminary investigation into suspected data breach, which is now closed, says Gabriel Wernstedt, press spokesperson for Säpo, to Ekot.
The preliminary investigation was initiated in the spring, approximately one year after the incident is said to have occurred.
The researcher who was subjected to the suspected data breach has appeared in the media as an expert. He has previously worked as an analyst for the Swedish Security Service and has also worked on defense issues for many years.
The researcher declines to comment on the matter, according to Ekot.
