Compared to 20 years ago, eating habits have improved significantly, notes the National Food Agency. Now, there is significantly more vegetables and fruit on the plate.
"Most children eat fruit and vegetables every day, and although half of four-year-olds eat too much sugar, they eat significantly less candy, juice, and snacks than children who were four years old in 2003," says Lotta Moraeus, a dietician at the National Food Agency in a press release.
However, half of all four-year-olds still consume more sugar than recommended. Both 1.5-year-olds and 4-year-olds, according to the survey, consume more meat and charcuterie than is considered healthy, primarily in the form of sausage.
The survey is now the first to focus on young children and was conducted by having over 1,800 families register what the children ate over two days.
