SKR Terminates Teachers’ Collective Agreement Over Working Hours Rules

The Swedish Association of Local Authorities and Regions (SKR) is terminating the collective agreement with Sweden’s teachers. The reason is working hours.

According to SKR (Swedish Association of Local Authorities and Regions), working hours are “double-regulated” by both law and collective agreement under the new legislation that has come into force in the school sector.

“This means that we need to adapt the collective agreement to the new legal conditions. We believe we are best placed to do that by negotiating a completely new agreement,” negotiation manager Jeanette Hedberg tells Sveriges Radio.

The agreement applies to around 220,000 teachers.

No major drama for now. The teachers’ union had also planned to terminate the agreement, which expires on the last day of March 2027, but the employers got there first, according to Moa Andersson, head of negotiations for Sweden’s teachers. However, she does not see the same conflict between the agreement and the law.

“They regulate slightly different things; they complement each other,” she tells TT.
