A player for the Slovakian U20 national team has been taken to hospital after being cut in the throat by a skate, local media in Sörmland report.

The incident occurred during a match between the Slovak and Czech U20 national teams in Nyköping, after a face-off, reports Södermanlands Nyheter.

One player fell over the other after a face-off. It was a pure accident, Magnus Mårtensson, competition manager at the Swedish Ice Hockey Association, told SVT Nyheter Sörmland.

The player, who Slovak media report is 17, was able to make it to the bench and was treated by medical personnel there.

The match, part of the Junior Crowns 5-nation tournament, has been suspended and will not resume.

The Swedish Ice Hockey Association writes on its website that the injury is serious and that the player has been taken to hospital, “but is reported to be stable and out of danger, according to the Slovak Ice Hockey Association”.
