The Sweden Democrat Richard Jomshof is stepping down as chairman of the Riksdag's Justice Committee. The announcement comes after a meeting in the SD party executive on Monday about the proposal to ban certain semi-automatic firearms.

The Government and The Sweden Democrats have backed the proposal. Jomshof, who is against a ban, describes the stance as "hasty and emotional" and that it "lacks anchorage in our respective parties".

He is resigning after "a long and objective debate" at the party board meeting.

"During that discussion, I announced that I, due to the presented criticism, but also because I am not willing to guide an revised proposal through the Justice Committee, have decided to resign as chairman of the Justice Committee", Jomshof writes on X.

"Richard has done much good for the party in the role as chairman of the Justice Committee and it is with mixed feelings that we have together concluded that this is the best way forward", writes the party's group leader Linda Lindberg in a written comment to TT.

Stands firm on agreement

On Friday, the Government and The Sweden Democrats announced that they want to ban hunters from having semi-automatic weapons with a military appearance, such as the AR-15. The Sweden Democrats stand firm on the agreement after Monday's meeting.

— At this meeting, this issue was discussed as a discussion point, it was never a question of making a different decision. It's about this being a question that evokes emotions, says vice party leader Henrik Vinge to Ekot in Sveriges Radio.

The proposal has met criticism from various quarters within The Sweden Democrats. Among other things, 24 out of 27 local districts have protested in a letter to the party board.

Vinge says that most are "characterized by some kind of humility" and understanding for the "difficult trade-offs" required in different issues.

But it's also a difficult situation for those who need to answer to members, interest groups, and others, he says to Ekot.

Reaction to Örebro murder

The proposal for a ban is a reaction to the mass murder in Örebro on Tuesday.

The suspected perpetrator had a license for several hunting weapons, but not the type that the proposal concerns. However, politicians emphasize that the AR-15 is a weapon that can be equipped with large magazines and has been used in mass shootings abroad.

Tobias Andersson (The Sweden Democrats), chairman of the Riksdag's Industry Committee, comments on Jomshof's resignation:

As chairman of another committee, I have appreciated him as chairman, he has been good at his job, and I regret it, he says to TT.

Richard Jomshof is resigning after a turbulent period as chairman of the heavy Justice Committee.

Last year, he was investigated on suspicion of incitement to racial hatred after sharing two images on X. In connection with the preliminary investigation, Jomshof took a break from his chairman duties, but after the prosecutor in September decided to drop the investigation, he returned to duty.

In the summer of 2023, there were demands for his resignation from The Social Democrats, The Left Party, The Center Party, and The Green Party after Jomshof made anti-Muslim statements. But since there was no majority support, there was no vote on his chairmanship in the committee.

The Government parties announced at the end of that summer that they had continued confidence in him.

Jomshof has also been criticized for his comment on Koran burnings during the NATO process in an interview with Dagens industri: "If they get upset, then burn a hundred more".

Born on July 6, 1969, and grew up in Helsingborg and in Glumslöv outside Landskrona.

Is educated as a social sciences teacher with history and geography as main subjects.

Became a member of The Sweden Democrats in 1999.

Has worked full-time with politics since the 2006 election.

Member of the Riksdag since 2010.
