It was a newly developed ballistic missile with nuclear capability that was used in an attack on the Ukrainian city of Dnipro. Something that Russia will now test under combat conditions, according to Putin.
The weapons system tested yesterday is another reliable guarantee for Russia's territorial integrity and sovereignty, says Putin at a televised meeting with the country's military leaders.
The use is seen as an escalation in light of Russia adopting a new nuclear doctrine where the threshold for using nuclear weapons has been lowered.
Putin also ordered the ballistic missile to be put into mass production. He claimed that no other country in the world has such a missile.
At the same time as he acknowledged that other states would soon develop something similar, he said:
It will happen tomorrow, in a year or two. But we have this system now. It's important.
Putin said that the launch of the Oreshnik missile was a direct response to Kyiv's forces using robots delivered by the US and the UK against Russian territory for the first time.
