It is no longer required of foreign buyers that they pay for Russian gas deliveries via the Kremlin-controlled Gazprombank.

The decree was signed by President Vladimir Putin on Thursday, after the bank was hit with American sanctions in November.

Several actors, including Hungary, according to reports, have asked for an exemption to avoid hassle and not be accused of violating sanctions.

Putin introduced in 2022, after the full-scale invasion of Ukraine, the requirement that "unfriendly" countries must pay for gas in rubles and through Gazprom.

Gazprombank was the last major Russian financial conglomerate that could handle payments for Russian gas.

The US Department of Finance motivated its sanctions decision by stating that Gazprombank was used as "a channel for Russia to purchase military equipment for its war efforts against Ukraine", as well as to pay soldiers.
