Paludan is charged with two cases of incitement to racial hatred and defamation. For the latter offense, the statute of limitations is two years, which means he must be served by Friday at the latest if he is to be convicted of it.

We have not received a standard acknowledgement of service to date, says chief magistrate Nicklas Söderberg.

First, the service is sent by post, and the recipient is expected to confirm in writing that it has been received. The next step is to try to serve by phone, but when Paludan realized the call was from the court, he immediately hung up.

The court has made numerous phone attempts and also requested assistance from the Copenhagen police with the service, since Paludan resides there. But so far, the acknowledgement has not arrived.

Ultimately, it is up to the court to decide whether Paludan should be considered served.

Whether he is served or not, that's an assessment. There is free evaluation of evidence as to whether one can believe that it has been established that he is served or not, says Nicklas Söderberg.

For incitement to racial hatred, the statute of limitations is five years.
