33 women have had their uterus unnecessarily removed at Akademiska Hospital in Uppsala during 2023 and 2024.
To prevent more women from being affected, Akademiska will introduce new routines. This means that tissue samples related to suspected precursors to uterine cancer must be assessed by multiple people, reports SVT News Uppsala.
The usual procedure is for a pathologist to assess alone and only seek help from others in case of difficulties, says Tommie Olofsson, operations manager at the laboratory.
Since we see that there are difficulties with EIN, which may not have been known, we now assess it together, and then the risk decreases.
EIN (Endometrial intraepithelial neoplasia) is a precursor to uterine cancer.
