Information from around 29 million Facebook users leaked in connection with a breach at the social media platform in 2018. Facebook owner Meta will now be fined 251 million euros, approximately 2.8 billion Swedish kronor.
The Irish Data Protection Authority (DPC) criticizes Meta in its decision for several security breaches, as hackers, among other things, gained access to users' email addresses and phone numbers.
"By allowing unauthorized exposure of profile information, the vulnerability behind this breach caused a serious risk of misuse of this type of data," states the DPC in a statement.
As recently as September, the DPC issued a fine of over one billion Swedish kronor for breaches of password security.
