The final piece of the puzzle is in place to enable satellite launches from Sweden. Something that is expected to happen from 2025 onwards with the help of a new rocket agreement.
The space company Swedish Space Corporation (SSC) has entered into an agreement with American Firefly Aerospace and Korean Perigee Aerospace to offer satellite launches from the Esrange space base in Kiruna.
We are all dependent on satellite services both in civil society and in terms of security. We see an increased interest in using various satellite services, primarily for environmental monitoring. With satellite data, you can get a broad overview, not least when it comes to climate and environment, says Charlotta Sund, CEO of SSC.
Currently, Sweden is the only place in Europe with a suitable location for launching this type of satellite.
As early as 2010, planning began for launching satellites from Sweden. The collaboration with the two rocket companies was the missing piece of the puzzle to enable satellite launches from the space base.
I want to emphasize the opportunities it provides for Swedish technological development in the commercial part of the space industry. More and more, we will be dependent on space to create a better society on Earth, says Charlotta Sund.
With Esrange's capacity and its geographical location, Charlotta Sund believes that the agreement with the American rocket manufacturer will benefit cooperation between countries.
Firefly is working with the American military, and if we create opportunities together, it will also give us opportunities for cooperation with NATO.
