Network sold encrypted mobile phones to criminals

Four people are being prosecuted for involvement in large-scale sales of encrypted communication services to criminals. The services have, among other things, been used to plan murders and arms smuggling.

The four are suspected of having sold equipment for approximately eleven million kronor during the period January 2020–March 2021, according to a press release from the Economic Crime Authority.

The suspicions concern serious accounting offenses.

"The crimes are serious considering that they involved very significant amounts and that there was no accounting at all, but above all that the crimes were of a particularly dangerous nature", says Henric Fagher, lead investigator and chief prosecutor at the Economic Crime Authority in Gothenburg, in a comment.

According to the investigation, the defendants were part of a sales network where they sold encrypted communication solutions, such as Sky-Ghost and EncroChat phones.

These phones, according to the police, have been almost exclusively used in criminal contexts, including for planning murders and selling narcotics and weapons.

"The prosecution is important because it shows that even facilitators of serious crime, who are higher up in the criminal hierarchy than the actual perpetrators, risk being held criminally liable for their actions", says Henric Fagher.
