Space X submitted an official application to local authorities on Thursday, American time, and requested a referendum to make Starbase a city.
According to Space X, it was the residents of the area who submitted the application.
"To continue to increase the workforce required to rapidly develop and manufacture Starship, we need the opportunity to build Starbase as a community. Therefore, we are requesting that Cameron County announces a referendum to enable the incorporation of Starbase as the newest city in the Rio Grande Valley", it states in the letter.
As early as 2021, Elon Musk presented the idea in a social media post, but this is the first time an application has been officially submitted.
More than 3,400 people work at Starbase, according to a review conducted by Eddie Treviño Jr, judge and the county's highest elected official.
Our legal department will review the application and see if it meets all statutory requirements and then we'll take it from there, he says.
The area is located in southern Texas, near the border with Mexico. Earlier this year, Elon Musk announced that he is also moving Space X's headquarters and his social media company X from California to Texas.
