At least 26 people have died after a boat sank off the coast of Senegal on Sunday, according to the country's navy.
Many of the passengers on the boat are still missing and the search operation is ongoing, writes Senegal's navy on X.
An unknown number of migrants were on board the boat when the accident occurred on Sunday off the coast near the city of M'bour.
Many African migrants heading for Europe depart from Senegal's coast. The stretch along the Atlantic coast is very dangerous, among other things due to strong currents. Thousands of people die and disappear every year on overcrowded boats.
More than 22,000 migrants have landed on the Canary Islands so far this year.
