One of Australia's largest banks, ANZ, has in contravention of applicable rules continued to charge millions of kronor in account fees from thousands of deceased customers, the Australian banking authority BCCC determines in a sanctions decision.
According to the authority, ANZ has in a serious and systematic manner breached applicable regulations. The bank is also said to have neglected its obligation to respond to questions about the fees from affected parties.
ANZ is now forced to refund 3.3 million Australian dollars (23 million kronor) to over 18,000 estates and write over 10,600 letters to those affected.
Another Australian bank is simultaneously warned by BCCC for not having refunded fees charged in contravention of the rules. A third bank is still being investigated for the same type of regulatory breach.
