Package Tours and Car Rentals Drive June Inflation Increase

Package tours and car rental prices pushed up inflation in June, according to the Statistical Central Bureau (SCB). Among food prices – which were virtually unchanged in June compared to May – the prices of fresh berries and leeks stood out the most. This reflects that the inflation figures are very volatile, says Nordea's chief analyst Torbjörn Isaksson.

Inflation in June rose to 2.8 percent according to the KPIF measure, shows a second calculation by the Statistical Central Bureau (SCB). This can be compared to 2.3 percent in May and the Swedish Central Bank's inflation target of 2.0 percent. The increase in inflation in June, according to the second calculation, was slightly lower than SCB's preliminary figures from last week.

The price increase for package tours and car rentals is described by several economists as a common summer holiday pattern. Länsförsäkringar's chief economist Alexandra Stråberg still believes that today's figure will make the Swedish Central Bank wait with interest rate cuts.

They would need a few more outcomes before they dare to cut again. That is, ensure that this is an exception, says Alexandra Stråberg.

Later cut

Swedbank's chief economist Mattias Persson describes today's detailed inflation figures as a good outcome even though inflation is still too high.

There is nothing to suggest that it will be sustained inflation, he says.

He believes at the same time that interest rate cuts from the Swedish Central Bank will have to wait until September. Nordea, on the other hand, does not believe in any more interest rate cuts from the Swedish Central Bank this year, but is not worried about today's definitive inflation figure.

This is not the beginning of a new inflation surge, says Nordea's chief analyst Torbjörn Isaksson.

Electricity prices fell by 6.3 percent from May to June. This at the same time as food and non-alcoholic beverages continued to contribute to the inflation rate in June, writes SCB.

Berries and leek

Food and non-alcoholic beverage prices were largely unchanged in June compared to May but rose in the annual rate by 5.3 percent.

And fresh berries and leek had significant price increases of 16.9 percent and 16.7 percent respectively compared to the previous month.

The coffee price, which earlier this year had a galloping development, rose 1 percent in June compared to May.
