The price base amount affects various benefits and social insurance, for example, guaranteed pension, study grants and parental insurance. In 2026, the price base amount may be increased by 400 kronor, to 59,200 kronor according to the Statistical Central Bureau (SCB).
During the years with high inflation, the price base amount has been increased more. For the year 2024, for example, the amount was increased by 4,800 kronor – one of the record increases in recent years. This is because the price base amount reflects how much prices have risen during the last twelve-month period. But as consumer price increases – inflation – have slowed down recently, the increase will be smaller.
We are starting to return to a more normal development of a price base amount, says Fernández.
Widened gaps
What may be most visible to the wallet is that the price base amount affects the breakpoint for the level of state income tax, according to Fernández. A salary increase does not necessarily mean that you also pay state income tax, if you are at the border.
Lower inflation, real salary increases – that incomes rise – tax cuts that take off, plus an upcoming election year can be the beginning of us again seeing "somewhat widened gaps among households", according to Fernández.
That is, it is a sparse increase for those with the lowest incomes, while those with higher incomes get to take part in low inflation, rising salaries and more tax cuts.
Welcome among households
Households are still pessimistic and hold on a bit too tightly to their wallets than what the economy actually requires of them, Fernández means.
For most, this would mean that you get more money in your wallet next year. It is something that is probably welcome among many households, says Fernández.
