Tampons sold in Sweden contain potentially toxic heavy metals, shows an analysis performed by the research institute Rise on behalf of P3 News.
The analysis was conducted on twelve different tampons from ten different brands on the Swedish market and shows that they, among other things, contain lead and arsenic.
It's about very low levels, according to experts.
We can't really speculate on how much is an acceptable amount, because we don't know. More research is needed to know if these substances can be extracted from the tampon and if they can be absorbed by the body, says Rise researcher Lorena Francini to P3.
Recently, a similar American study was conducted on tampons sold in the EU, the UK, and the USA.
