A man in Hong Kong is sentenced to nearly 24 years in prison for planning a bombing in Hong Kong in connection with extensive protests against China's growing influence in 2019.
The man is said to have admitted to planning the deed. According to the court's account, it was stopped before it could be carried out.
The man is one of seven who are sentenced for involvement in a larger plan to place bombs and shoot police in December 2019.
According to Judge Judianna Barnes, the plan was a malicious declaration of war against society. The pro-democracy demonstrations that raged in 2019 were directed against China's tighter grip on Hong Kong and not least its judiciary.
One of the other six defendants is sentenced to over 13 years in prison, and the remaining five to between nearly six years and 12 years in prison.
