Dodik has been in hiding for months. But on Friday, he appeared voluntarily along with his lawyer, "to be questioned as a suspect in the investigation", it says in a statement from Bosnia's prosecution authority.

Dodik is the president of Republika Srpska, the Serbian part of Bosnia and Herzegovina. He has repeatedly demanded that the territory be separated from the rest of Bosnia. In February, he was sentenced to one year in prison and banned from holding political offices for six years.

On March 18, an arrest warrant was issued and federal police have made several attempts to arrest Dodik - who, despite being wanted, has visited Serbia, Russia, and Hungary with the protection of Republika Srpska's police force.

The crisis has been described as the worst in the country since the Bosnian war in 1992-1995.
