Italy has summoned Iran's ambassador to the country to protest the arrest of Italian journalist Cecilia Sala in Tehran.

"The government has tirelessly worked ever since Cecilia Sala's arrest to ensure she can come home, and for her rights to be respected", writes Italy's Foreign Minister Antonio Tajani on X.

"We will not abandon Cecilia and her parents until she is free."

Sala was arrested on December 19. She was in Iran to interview, among others, a former commander, a female comedian, and a woman who rejects the country's conservative interpretation of religious values. She is accused of having broken Iranian laws.

Her employer fears that she is being held in the notorious Evin prison in Tehran.
