”The victims had left al-Fashir in an attempt to escape the siege and the escalating clashes", it says in a statement from The Emergency Lawyers who document atrocities in the ongoing war between Sudan's army and the paramilitary Rapid Support Forces (RSF).

In recent days, RSF has stepped up its attacks on strategically important al-Fashir, which is located about 80 miles southwest of the capital Khartum. The city has been under RSF's siege for over a year, but the group has not managed to capture it – al-Fashir is still held by the Sudanese army.

The war in Sudan began in April 2023 when the conflict between the army and RSF broke out and spread across the country. More than 20,000 people have been killed and over 14 million have been displaced from their homes. The situation in Sudan is often described as the largest humanitarian disaster in the world.
