The propaganda broadcasts, which in addition to South Korean pop music also sent news across the border, were paused in June after the new president Lee Jae-Myung was elected. Then Pyongyang also stopped playing "bizarre and unpleasant noise" along the border, writes AFP.
The dismantling of the loudspeakers is described by a spokesperson from the South Korean military as a "practical measure to reduce tensions with the North, provided that such measures do not compromise the military's readiness".
The loudspeakers have previously been assembled and removed on several occasions.
