The Italian journalist Cecilia Sala has been released from prison in Iran and is on her way home, announces the Italian government.
Sala is reported to be on a plane that will land in Rome on Wednesday afternoon.
The journalist was arrested on December 19. She was in Iran to interview, among others, a former commander, a female comedian, and a woman who rejects the country's conservative interpretation of religious values.
Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni, who announces the release, expresses gratitude to "all those who contributed to making it possible for Cecilia to return". She also announces that she informed Sala's parents of the news in a phone call.
