For the first time, Iran confirms that the Italian journalist Cecilia Sala has been arrested. She is accused of having broken the country's laws, according to the state news agency Irna.
Sala was arrested on December 19. She was in Iran to interview, among others, a former commander, a female comedian, and a woman who rejects the country's conservative interpretation of religious values, reports BBC.
Sala, who works for, among others, the daily newspaper Il Foglio, is believed to be held in the notorious Evin prison in Tehran, according to her other employer Chora Media.
Staff from the Italian embassy have been allowed to visit Sala in Iranian captivity, according to the regime in Tehran.
