A man in Umeå is sentenced to two years in prison after holding his baby over a balcony railing – approximately eight meters above the ground, reports Västerbottens-kuriren.

It was in June that the mother alerted the police when the man was intoxicated and behaved threateningly.

The man has stated in police questioning that the baby was only outside the balcony railing for a few seconds and that he never said he would drop it.

The Umeå District Court assesses that the man's actions were intended to create fear and he is therefore convicted of gross unlawful threats, writes the newspaper.

"It is a question of a remarkably reckless act that was also directly life-threatening considering his intoxication and state of mind," the court writes in the verdict on the prison sentence.

He is also convicted of unlawful threats and gross child neglect.
