One of the early eighties' blockbuster films, "An Officer and a Gentleman", is to be remade. The role of Zack Mayo, which once made Richard Gere a major star, is to be taken on, according to reports in Deadline, by Miles Teller.
This will be the second time in quick succession that Teller has donned the role of a naval officer. In "Top Gun: Maverick", he played Bradley "Rooster" Bradshaw, one of the fighter pilots trained by Tom Cruise's character.
"An Officer and a Gentleman", directed by Taylor Hackford, premiered in 1982 and was nominated for six Oscars. In addition to Gere, Debra Winger in the role of a factory worker and Louis Gossett Jr as the tough instructor Sergeant Foley also received a significant career boost.
Gossett Jr, who passed away earlier this year, was the first black man to be awarded an Oscar for Best Supporting Actor. The film's theme song, the duet "Up Where We Belong" by Joe Cocker and Jennifer Warnes, also won an Oscar for Best Original Song.
