It is still unclear what the proposal for a ceasefire entails in detail and Hamas does not go into whether they have agreed to anything specific.

The Islamist movement writes, however, in its statement, which is referred to by several international media, that it is ready to "immediately enter into serious negotiations on the mechanism for implementing" the proposal.

The message comes after Hamas earlier on Friday announced that it had held talks with other Palestinian groups about the proposal. Islamic Jihad says after Hamas' message that it supports talks about a ceasefire, reports AFP.

Pressed about hostages

Israel's Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu will likely give his message during a visit to Washington on Monday. Netanyahu has been heavily pressured at home in recent times about the fate of the hostages.

I am, first and foremost, deeply concerned about ensuring the return of all hostages, said Netanyahu on Friday.

US President Donald Trump claimed this week that Israel has already agreed to the "necessary conditions" for implementing a 60-day ceasefire.

In response to a question on Thursday about whether he still wants the US to take over Gaza - which he has previously said on several occasions in statements that have sparked sharp criticism - he replied that he wants to see "security for the people of Gaza".

They have been through hell, said Trump.

The details unclear

The details of the proposal for a ceasefire, apart from the fact that it involves a 60-day ceasefire, are still unclear. According to reports, it includes, among other things, that Hamas releases a number of Israeli hostages in Gaza who are still alive in exchange for Israel releasing a number of Palestinian prisoners.

A final plan is expected to be presented by the mediating countries Qatar and Egypt.

The previous ceasefire in Gaza ended abruptly on March 18 when Israel unilaterally broke the agreement.
