We believe that energy from nuclear power has a crucial role to play in supporting our clean growth and helping to deliver progress in AI, says Michael Terrell, head of energy and climate at Google.
No details were disclosed about the value of the agreement.
The agreement means that Kairos will develop a series of SMRs, small-scale reactors, for Google's account. The first is expected to be ready for operation by 2030 at the latest, according to the two companies. Additional reactors are expected to be operational by 2035, and generate a combined output of 500 megawatts.
Just over a month ago, technology and AI giant Microsoft announced that they had entered into an agreement with Constellation Energy, which owns the decommissioned Three Mile Island nuclear power plant in Pennsylvania, USA. The plan is to put the plant back into operation and for Microsoft to receive the electricity produced.
One of the reactors at the Three Mile Island plant has been permanently shut down after a partial meltdown in 1979, the worst accident in American nuclear power history to date. The other reactor was shut down in 2019 for economic reasons.
