The rescue service was alerted to the fire in the hangar building at Näsinge airfield on Saturday morning. Both Norwegian and Swedish rescue services participated in the extinguishing work.
In the afternoon, the acute phase of the operation was completed.
We will be there for a few more hours. Right now, there are only minor embers left. Otherwise, the fire is extinguished, says Lidija Bradaric, alarm and control operator at the rescue service, to TT.
Due to the smoke, a nearby nursing home was evacuated.
The hangar contains an office building where the fire also broke out. There was no activity in the premises when the fire started, and there are no reports of personal injuries. However, there were four aircraft in the hangar that the rescue service managed to get out.
It will likely require major repairs, the smoke has entered the electronics. It's sad, says Dick Schef, chairman of Strömstad flying club, to SVT Nyheter Väst.
Three of the planes are privately owned, and one belongs to the club. Their total value is approximately four million kronor.
It's shocking. We've been running the club since the 1960s. You get really sad. It's a bit of a lifetime's work, says Dick Schef to Göteborgs-Posten.
The police will cordon off the area for a technical investigation. Since the cause of the fire is unknown, the case is being investigated as arson for the time being.
