The inquiry has been given the task of, so to speak, test-pressing these questions in other countries as well, and there have been other contacts, says Minister of Justice Gunnar Strömmer (M) to Ekot.

The discussions with Estonia have, however, been more concrete than in other cases, according to Strömmer, who last week met his Estonian ministerial colleague Liisa Pakosta in Tallinn.

The question, he emphasizes, is in an early stage. An inquiry will be presented in January.

There is a significant shortage of prison places in Sweden, and the need is expected to increase further.

Over the next ten years, a comprehensive expansion of the number of remand prison and institution places is planned. In the meantime, rented places abroad have been raised as temporary solutions.
